I've been thinking about going naptural. What do I need to do? You can cut all of the chemical off also known as the " Big Chop" or gradually cut the ends off over time. You can wear your hair as you normally do until it gets to the point where you have too much new growth. At this point other options are available such as 2-strand twists with the ends curled, flexi rod set and maybe extentions. During this time, moisture is a must. Straight styles need oil or shea butter---both retailed at the salon. For twists, you can use Miss Jessie's butter creme and oil. Nu Ade or New bein or Warm Spirit works fine.
The Big Chop! What is that?
The Big Chop is a term used for indidividuals who want to go naptural and they simply do it. They decide to cut all of the chemical off creating a drastic change without question. You go girl!
How much new growth would I need to wear a naptural style?
Every one's hair texture is different. For the kinkier or tighter curl patterns, you can probably get a coiled style with 2 inches of new growth. For the looser curl patterns you would need at least 3 to 4 inches. Of course if you are just going to wear the short naptural look, any length is fine. That is your preference.
Steamed Treatments? What's the difference between the steamer and the dryer?
Both give sufficient moisture, however the steamer gives you more. Your naptural hair needs moisture. The steam give you moist air as opposed to dry air so you get the mazimum amount of moisture your hair needs. It quenches your hair's thirst.
What styles are available for short hair?
Normally, the shorter the hair, only coils or the coil-out look can be accomplished.
Can I shampoo my hair every day?
It is not necessary to shampoo every day. You loose your natural oils if you do this. There are moisturizers such as Kinky Curly's Spiral Spritz and Curls Quenched Moisturizer. These products are a 2nd day refresher, a leave-in conditioner and moisturizer. You can also get in the shower and rinse your hair but remember to replace what you just rinsed out.
How long does my hair need to be to get 2-strand twists?
Once again texture plays a big part in this style. With the kinkier curl patterns, 3 inches should do the trick but with looser curl patterns, 4 to 5 inches is necessary.
I would like to do a spiral look. What are my options?
You may do a flexi set or iron out spiral set. A coil out can be done but it depends on your texture and curl pattern.
What do I use to maintain this look?
You need to purchase Ashea shea butter, Curls' whipped creme, New Bein Hair milk, NuAde hair oil, or Mixed Chicks Hair silk- the name speaks for itself.
Do I need to tie my hair down at night?
If you have the coil out or flexi set, you need to sleep in a bonnet. Two strand twists you may use a scarf or bonnet, however if your hair is at a length past your ears, you may want to use a bonnet. The ends of your hair will stick out and end up looking crazy. If this does happen, spritz your twists with Curls' Quenched moisture or Kinky -Curlys' Spiral Spritz, it will loosing up the hair and will allow it to hang correctly
What if I work out, will my style last and how long?
Every one is different and every one's hair is different. Your coil -out depending on the length and texture will be fine. The older your coil -out is the fuller it will be. You working out should create your fullness faster. You are sweating in your roots and your style will be fine. Two - Strand twists will have no problem with you working out.
I am naptural, what styles are available for me?
You can achieve styles like 2-strand twists, flattwists or coils. You can get combo styles with cornrows or flattwists. You can get flexi -rod styles. To achieve the straight look, a press n curl or iron out can also be achieved. However be aware that the flat iron breaks down your texture creating a looser curl pattern, some times so loose it appears straight in some areas on your head and it never reverts back to kinky.
How do I comb my natural hair?
Natural hair should be combed when wet. What I reccommend is that you detangle your hair with your fingers as you are shampoo-ing. When you are finished and the conditioner is in, you may then take a wide tooth comb and comb through your hair. Wet or dry, your hair is very delicate. Please be careful and do not be alarmed from the amount of hair coming out. Your hair sheds every day and if you havent combed in it in few, it builds up.
I want my hair to look like that picture. How can I accomplish that look?
Most of the time, to create a naptural style that looks just like the picture is impossible. Your hair is not the same as the picture. Your texture, your density, your pattern is different. However, the style can be created but the look may not be the same.
What type of shampoo and conditioner do I use on my natural hair?
You should use a creamy, non- sulfate, moisturizing or hydrating shampoo. Retailed at Essentials Beauty Spa are various types of shamppos and conditioners. Miss Jessie's, Kinky - Curly, Mixed Chicks and Curls Products are sold here just to name a few.
My hair is shedding? What should I do?
Most people have the misconception that their hair is shedding. Your hair sheds 50 to 100 strands every day. When your hair is not combed, natural or chemically altered, the only way for that hair to shed is when you shampoo, comb or brush. The large amount of hair that may scare you is normal.
Can I color my hair if I am naptural?
Yes, you can color your hair. You must keep it moisturized. Keep in mind that certain medicines react with chemicals in different ways. You may want to check with your doctor.
My hair is so dry, what can I use?
Most of the time, people think that their hair is dry but it really isnt. Naptural hair has many twists, waves, curves and turns. Whatever products you put into your hair, whether it is lotion or oil or a cream, it is not going to saturate into every curve. Your hair is not dry, it just looks dry. You have to apply enough product and remember that with time, your style will loose it's shine. Spruce it up with oil, shine spray or pomade. All available at the salon. My hair is so hard to manage, I want to put a texturizer in my hair. Is that a chemical? Is it damaging?
Silkeners, blow out, mild relaxer texturizers---all the same. We call them texlaxers. There is no such thing as a natural relaxer. Putting this chemical in your hair creates the same problems for you as a relaxer does. In fact, your hair will be over processed in some places creating your style to be stringy. When you want to create a naptural style such as twists, this will be stringy. You wont be able to accomplish the coiled look. So basically you have a relaxer that wasnt left in as long but it is the same thing- A texlaxer. Essentials Beauty Spa does not provide this service.
How long do the naptural styles last?
Styles such as two-strand twists and coils can last 2 to 3 weeks. it depends on your texture and your daily activities. Cornrows can last up to three weeks. Flattwists, depending on your length and texture, 2 to 3 weeks. You need to oil your scalp and apply moisture to your style.
What type of products do I use to maintain my coil-out?
It depends on your texture. For the thicker kinkier textures, Miss Jessie's buttercreme is recommended. However if your texture is looser and more on the thinner side, you may need to use Curls' whipped creme. New Bein Hair milk, Design Essentials' Silk Essentials, are also highly recommended. You can also use my favorite; Mixed Chicks Hair silk. All products are sold at our salon.
What product do I use to maintain my two-strand twists?
You can use Nu Ade or New Bein Hair oil on your hair and scalp. You can use Miss Jessies' buttercreme or New Bein Hair Milk for moisture. Of course my favorite is suggested; Mixed Chicks Hair silk. All these products and more are sold here at Essentials Beauty Spa.
What products do I use to fingerstyle my natural hair?
You can use Miss Jessies' Pudding and Buttercreme. On the Curls' line you may use the Souffle or Whipped Creme. On the Kinky - Curly line, you can use the Knot Today and Curling Custard. On the Mixed Chicks line, you may use the Leave in Conditioner styling creme and the hair silk.

What products do I use for my flattwists?
You should use oil for your scalp or a shine spritz, We retail Design Essentials, Nairobi and Ashea shines and New bein and Nu Ade hair oils.
Do:
Stay away from the heavy products. Greasy products may actually clog hair follicles and]cause other problems including scalp folliculitis and acne on the forehead and temples.
Keep hair moisturized.
Wearing hats can be damaging.Wear hats with natural fibers.
Use a satin or silk scarf and pillow. Cotton soaks up the oil in your hair, leaving it dull and dry.
Avoid petroleum and mineral oil.
Do Not
Think that naptural hair is very strong. It is very fragile. Think of each curl and wave as a breaking point.
Think that combing and styling natural hair is the same as when you had a relaxer.
Types of hair
Type 4A, 4B, or 4C are your kinkier hair types. This hair is tighly coiled and many people think is very strong. It is very fragile. Treat your hair like silk. If not moisturized it breaks very easily, more than chemically altered hair. This is more like a Z pattern. You will experience alot of frizz. This texture is very dry.
Types 3A, 3B, or 3C are your S patterns, tight S or looser S. Do not apply too much product to your hair, it will weigh it down. Your hair is not as tightly coiled. This texture is dry but not as dry as the 4 patterns.
Types 2A, 2B, or 2C are your wavy patterns. You have a slight wave pattern and are less likely to have frizz. Your hair is easy to straighten and will maintain straighter styles much longer. You definetly should not put too much product on your hair as it will definetly be weighed down.
Type 1.Straight straight straight hair....This pattern has no curl at all and will definetly be hard to maintain a curl, however this hair type is not dry at all.
